The New Zealand Fencible Society Incorporated (NZFSI) has launched a new website to preserve and celebrate the remarkable history of the early settlers who arrived in Auckland during the mid-1800s. These settlers were part of a unique group known as the New Zealand Fencibles, retired soldiers from the British Army who served as a defensive reserve force for the fledgling Auckland settlement.
The Details
The New Zealand Fencible Society Incorporated (NZFSI) has launched a new website to preserve and celebrate the remarkable history of the early settlers who arrived in Auckland during the mid-1800s. These settlers were part of a unique group known as the New Zealand Fencibles, retired soldiers from the British Army who served as a defensive reserve force for the fledgling Auckland settlement. Over time, the society's mission has grown to include the research and documentation of all Empire Veterans who settled in New Zealand before 1902, enriching our understanding of New Zealand's heritage.
When we first connected with the president of NZFSI, his passion for the society’s mission was obvious. He shared the incredible story of the Fencibles database—a treasure trove of historical records compiled by dedicated volunteers over decades. This database preserves not only the history of the original settlers but also the extensive family trees of their descendants. However, the society didn’t have an effective means of maintaining and sharing this valuable resource.
The Solution
Our goal was to create a modern website that could serve as a hub for members and administrators alike. The new platform integrates a membership CRM and a cutting-edge content management system, enabling administrators to update the site with ease. Beyond this, the project’s centerpiece was transforming the Fencibles database into an accessible, web-based resource.
Legacy Family Software
Previously, the database was stored on a standalone computer running Legacy Family Tree Software, making it challenging for others to access and use. Inquiries were managed manually via email or Facebook, consuming significant time and effort. By migrating the database online, we enabled a seamless experience for users worldwide. This was achieved by exporting the Legacy data as a GEDCOM file, a widely used format for genealogy records. We reformatted this data for import into streamSWEET, enabling us to design an intuitive, web-based search system accessible to signed-up members. This transition not only modernised the database but also ensured its long-term sustainability.
Currently, the database contains over 78,000 individual names, providing an unparalleled resource for genealogical research. Access is available to members upon payment of a resource fee, which helps cover the ongoing costs of website management.
With their new digital platform, the New Zealand Fencible Society is well-positioned to continue their vital work. They now have the tools to safeguard the legacy of early settlers, connecting descendants with their rich history. Today, it is estimated that there are over a quarter of a million descendants of Fencible families living worldwide—a testament to the enduring impact of these early pioneers.
