A customer of ours attends an annual trade show to sell and market their products. This is a great opportunity to make sales and find new customers but it also comes with a lot of manual work at the point of sale. The process was laborious, slow and prone to errors. All sales would have to be reconciled into the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system later, adding even more time and effort.
We were asked to come up with a better way. The solution was simple but effective.
Using a laptop connected to a scanner customers could scan a product to bring up the ‘live price' fed directly from the ERP system through a web interface. Multiple discounts could be configured via the admin, and applied to the standard pricing on purchase as required. Payment was collected via EFTPOS, and the order marked as paid.
The customer was either free to take the product with them or for larger items shipping details were collected.
The sales information was then pushed back into the web ecommerce platform, and in-turn passed via web-service back into the ERP system to support the usual business processes and account functionality.
This block of functionality lends itself easily to fast online ecommerce from anywhere in the world using online payment gateway technology and hand-held (or cell phone) scanners, meaning there are no barriers to making a sale!
